Fucoidan is a bioactive molecule found within the cell walls of brown seaweeds that was first discovered by Doctor Harald Kylin from Uppsala University in Sweden in 1913. Fucoidan is associated with being the power behind seaweed’s resilience, protecting it from numerous environmental stressors. Since its discovery, Fucoidan has been extensively analysed in global scientific research, with thousands of peer reviewed publications.

Sustainability & Ethics

Hand harvested seaweed means that the seaweed is cut using a knife by hand. 15cm of the stipe of the seaweed is left behind. Studies have shown that cutting seaweed in this way encourages growth. Even with the knowledge of these practices and confidence in the sustainability of this harvesting method we are now growing seaweed from seed on long lines which is another sustainable harvesting solution that ensures supply and creates a safe environment for sea life and protects against coastal erosion.

The species of seaweed used to extract Fucoidan is called Fucus vesiculosus or more commonly Bladderwrack. 80 to 90,0000 tonnes of this species grows on the west coast of Ireland annually making it a super sustainable option.

The extraction of SEABODY Fucoidan is done using a gentle process with zero harsh chemicals or organic solvents. As well as this, the process to extract these bioactives is done with a zero waste strategy, with all algae rich side streams such as water and fibre beings diverted away from waste as they would have been in previous generations, and turned into value added products where possible. The water goes to an organic biostimulant producer in County Galway and ends up being returned to the soil, while the fibre side stream has shown very promising characteristics and will reach the market as a SEABODY product in the future.

No, there are no harsh chemicals used in the extraction of our marine bioactive ingredients. It is a water based process. This is important to us from an environmental perspective but also the mission to create the highest quality products that meet conscious consumer needs.

We have an expert quality team in place who manage the sourcing of our micronutrients with our manufacturer and ensure quality and safety at every step.

Yes, this is something that is very important to us. From harvester to consumer we only work with suppliers and companies who align with out ethos to create a fair working community.

SEABODY products are contained in predominantly glass packaging. Glass has been chosen as it is a traditional and infinitely recyclable material, meaning it can be recycled indefinitely. The dark  violetglass used is particularly special in that is protects the capsules and natural ingredients within them, by filtering out damaging rays of the visible light spectrum and allowing portions of the UVA and infrared light waves in, keeping the products inside fresher for a longer period of time. The lids and closures that accompany our bottles and jars are made from a variety of different plastics which may or may not be recyclable in your area. We are working on two solutions for this: 1. We hope to be able to take back these closures for reuse or responsible disposal. 2. Change to a new, more sustainable material for our lids by 2023. Our e-commerce boxes are made from recycled materials and are fully recyclable. The paper filling is biodegradable and even the sticker that keeps the box closed in transport is made from recycled paper.

We have made a commitment to use minimal and compact packaging throughout. Our supplement jars are chosen to perfectly fit the number of capsules within them thereby excluding the need for a filler. Our compact e-commerce boxes have been custom made from recycled materials. We have included a double sided card within your purchase to thank you & welcome you to our community but have intentionally not created a product brochure or other content which is all available on our website. You will also notice that you do not get a physical receipt in your purchase as your digital receipt, which you receive by email will suffice should you wish to return your purchase for any reason.
