The Art of Winding Down

Why Sleep Starts Before Bedtime

We spend a lot of time thinking about sleep. How long we get. How deeply we sleep. What time we go to bed. The latest sleep tracker, supplement or clever way to improve our rest.

But perhaps the more interesting question is what happens before we get there. At Seabody, Sleep is one of our pillars of wellness. We place it alongside movement, nutrition, emotional wellbeing, skincare and the other practices that shape how we care for the body.

And just as we have started to think differently about movement, not simply the workout, but the recovery and moments that surround it, perhaps sleep deserves the same consideration.

Because sleep doesn’t begin the moment we climb into bed. There is a space between the pace of the day and the stillness of the night. A transition that can easily get lost when the last email, the last scroll and the last task of the day follow us right up to bedtime.

Winding down won’t solve every reason we struggle with sleep. But it can give the body and mind a clearer transition between the demands of the day and the stillness of the night

Sleep starts before bedtime.

The transition into sleep rarely begins the moment we get into bed.

After a busy day, we can still be carrying everything that came before it. The unfinished task. The late conversation. The phone beside us. The feeling that there is always something else to do.

Perhaps that is why winding down deserves more attention. Not as another routine to perfect, but as a way of creating some separation between the demands of the day and the slower pace of the evening.

The simplest things can help mark that shift. For some, it might be a slower or a few minutes of reading. For others, it might simply be putting the phone down when the day allows, or taking a few quiet minutes before getting into bed. It doesn’t have to look the same every night.

There is no perfect formula. And perhaps there doesn’t need to be.

The Power of Repetition

We often think of routines as something we have to be disciplined about. But there is something powerful about doing the same small things, in the same way, often enough that they become familiar. A familiar sequence can create a sense of separation between one part of the day and the next. Activity gives way to stillness. The pace changes. We begin to recognise that the day is coming to an end.

This feels particularly relevant at a time when even sleep has become something to optimise. We track it. Measure it. Analyse it. Look for the next thing that might make the night better. However, rather than adding more to the evening, there is value in returning to a few things that feel good, familiar and achievable. Not a perfect routine. Just a rhythm that feels natural enough to return to.

That thinking sits at the heart of Seabody’s Sleep Collection. Born from our luxury spa treatments and informed by cellular science, Sleep Body Oil and Sleep Body Balm were created for the quieter part of the day, bringing bodycare into those final moments before rest.

The Sleep Body Oil combines ocean-sourced magnesium, passionflower seed oil and marine actives with a calming fragrance of bergamot, jasmine and cedarwood. The Sleep Body Balm follows with ocean-sourced magnesium, squalane, avocado oil and a softer blend of lavender, chamomile and neroli.

Sleep is Part of a Bigger Rhythm

Perhaps this is where sleep connects back to the wider picture of wellness. Movement asks something of the body. Nutrition supports it. Moments of stillness create space to reconnect. And sleep gives us time to step away from the demands of the day.

These aren’t separate pursuits. They are different parts of the same rhythm. At Seabody, Sleep is one of our pillars of wellness because rest is not something that sits apart from the way we live. It is part of how we move through the day, recover, reconnect and begin again.

We can’t always control the day. But we can create small moments that help us leave some of it behind.
